There are four mains to choose from :
Of all our cafe expeditions and travels for food, Penang still firmly holds the #1 spot for us. Certain local fares like Asam Laksa may take an acquired taste to appreciate them, but out of all our efforts to bring our foreign friends for Cuti-cuti Penang, most of them enjoyed food here. With all the RM3 hokkien mee and wanton mee around, it is crucial to stay competitive in terms of pricing.
Yella Fork Cafe recently opened at Jalan Chow Thye, along with some new eateries which we featured previously (Basement Six). Don’t worry we will not bore you with yet another cafe that serves regular eggs ben or breakfast platters. It is a cafe that serves fusion-Australian dishes to offer you a little something that is slightly different from the usual brunches which most cafes are already serving anyway. Another catch which appeals to our thrifty Penangite side being the pricing of the dishes set on the lower end, which is bound to attract a good number of patrons looking for affordable good food.
Chow Thye Road has been busier than usual this year. One of the restaurant that caught my eye as we drove pass was the tastefully designed restaurant Basement 6. A restaurant that serves breakfast (8am – 11am only), lunch starts (12 noon till last call at 3pm) and dinner (6pm to 10pm).
We were sceptical initially, suspecting it to be one of those “nice to see only” cafes mushrooming in Penang. The patio area was designed to give the visitors a garden in the city ambience. We loved the little pots of plants accenting each table. For those who are already imagining the sweltering heat of the outdoors, fear not as the ceiling walls are raised high and abundant fans air the space. Diners can choose the indoor restaurant for the air-conditioned spot. We took the outdoor spot for the breezy wind and natural daylight while munching our breakfast. We had a heartily breakfast and diners can opt for their affordable lunch set / menu if one opt to laze on their bed on the weekends
Coffee Smith is the new talk of the town located at Maritime Piazza along Karpal Singh Drive/ Jelutong Promenade. Coffee Smith is a franchise restaurant from Taiwan, serving their famous Artisan coffee and western-italian food. The industrial themed interior design is definitely on of the star factors. I love the concrete finishings and the “tong” converted arm chairs. My fellow Instagrammers out there, here is a place with much photo ops! Be it the vintage telephones, the 3D painted clock tower or the assorted old school light bulbs. The press ad styled menu is a nice finishing touch. Two thumbs up for the food plating as well
Coffee Smith’s MUST TRY would be the Artisan coffee (picture below). I confess that I have this habit of ordering coffee black and then shyly going back to request for a cup of milk. Just because they can never get the RIGHT combination! With Artisan coffee, I now have the luxury of my own version of the perfect coffee. The first small yellow cup is the espresso, the larger cup in the middle would be the center of attention black coffee. Finally you get a mini jug of milk. Be it a latte, cappuccino or an espresso, mix and taste away!
Get’em Smack Cafe located at one of the shops in Penang Times Square. In their small and cozy interior serving a variety of mouth watering western cuisine ranging from crispy roasted chicken to mildly spiced shrimp aglio olio. The cafe also serves UK-imported Twinings tea and freshly-made desserts such as mango crepe, chocolate brownies and ice-cream. Get’s em Smack does not serve pork or alcohol on its menu.
