Launched on 31 Aug 2013 and officiated by the Penang Chief Minister in hope to create a better visualization for children in photography and eye opener for newbies. While walking thru the walls of the exhibition, one can immerse into the evolution of cameras from the eighteen century to the magic of photography in the dark room. Displaying a collection up to 1000 vintage cameras and accessories in the museum. They topped up with a toy camera corner where Disney cartoon meets vintage. What better way to end the tour with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake in their cozy setting cafe.
Double Exposure Cafe is located at the last section of the Camera Museum in Penang serving assorted cakes, cupcakes, pies and light breakfast. Double Exposure Cafe served their drinks in camera lens cup which goes very well with the overall theme. Their concept is to have a chilling area after a 30-40 mins tour around the museum with simple wooden setup. Siam Road Char Koay Teow stall already has its name on its own. It was our first attempt eventhough i’m a Penangite. For those not familiar to Penang, is near Anson Road and located next to Stacks Burger previously (they too have moved, click to find out their latest location). It is really hard to find a parking spot, and Siam Road Char Koay Teow lies at the corner of the junction on Siam Road. Thankfully despite rain or shine, the shop opposite the stall is open for dine-in, those are where all the hidden queue is located. I was conned thinking after the 4 people in front of me, it would be my turn!. Another reason to stop by, they don’t crazily hike up the price for a plate of Char Koay Teow. For small size, they charge RM4 and big size, RM5.50. Good things don’t come by easy, so sit back, relax and wait patiently for your koay teow to come!
If you are wondering where to go for a hearty meal tonight for Christmas Eve, you may want to check out Javrie Restaurant & Pizzeria located at Gurney Paragon Mall. The restaurant is well decorated in the 70’s theme, utilizing the vintage poster-montage wall as a background for the momento photographs filled with scrumptious homemade pizzas, mouthwatering mushroom soup and unique ramen burgers. There is also an added touch of smooth wooden wall with glass panes to separate diners and passer-by shoppers, creating the perfect ambiance away from the hectic shopping scene just outside.
Hot deals from their menu includes their variety pizza options such as flaming tropical seafood, BBQ meat fiesta and tomyam chicken delight. AND the list goes on…
We chanced upon a Groupon deal of cash voucher RM 50 for just RM 25 and decided to give this new place a try.
What is curry mee? Penang Curry Mee is one of the MUST TRY hawker food when in Penang. This dish is made up from the thin yellow noodles and rice vermicelli (which we call bihun / bee hoon ) here served with spicy curry soup and coconut milk. To complete the dish, locals usually add in extra ingredients like dried tofu (tau pok), pig’s coagulated blood cubes, prawn, cuttlefish, chicken, boiled eggs, long beans and cockles. Just thinking about it, i’m sure you are already drooling. In certain places in Southeast Asia, especially southern Malaysia, Johor and Singapore calls it Curry Laksa.
Why this place? When we first visited this place, Hot Bowl White Curry Mee was filled with tourists and locals queuing up just to eat their curry mee / deboned chicken. Despite the long queue, we waited patiently for a table and try for ourselves. Unlike other Curry Mee stalls in Penang, Hot Bowl has a lighter pale colour soup compared to others because less coconut milk is used, hence the locals call this place the White Curry Mee. On each table, they prepared a container of chilli paste for the customers to add in at their own will. The homemade chilli paste helps to flavoured the overall taste better and spicier. Their shop is situated along Lorong Abu Siti. Also nearby is the famous Abu Siti Lane jelly coconuts and fresh coconuts.
Okonomi means ‘what you want’ or ‘what toy like’ while Yaki means grilled or cooked. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake. Okonomiyaki is widely available throughout Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan savour it differently. It was first invented in WW2. Okonomiyaki is prepared much like a pancake. The batter made from flour, grated nagaimo, eggs, shredded cabbages, slices of onions and pork mixed alll together and fried on both sides on a hot plate/pan using a metal spatula. The spatula is later used to slice the dish when it has finished cooking. Usually savour together with the okonomiyaki sauce and dashi/aonori/katsuobushi flakes.
Okomen Japanese Restaurant, is the new restaurant in Queensbay Mall. Unlike other Japanese restaurants, they specialize in okonomiyaki and ramen instead of sushi and sashimi. It has been a long wait for Penang folks for the opening of both Okomen and Sushi Tei situated at the north zone inside the mall.
