The famous Uncle Jang restaurant is now here in Penang. The Uncle Jang franchise is located at Vantage Desiran Tanjung, the row of shophouses situated along the main road of Tanjung Tokong on your way to Tanjung Bungah. Their main menu is their dak galbi with a choice of Original Spicy or Super Spicy. The traditional dak galbi is one of the most popular Koreans dish. Dak galbi consist of diced chicken marinated in gochujang paste (Chilli pepper paste) stir fried together with slice cabbages and noodles on a hot plate.
Recently we visited Huo Tan Wang located at the newly refurbished Chime Heritage behind Penang Plaza. Huo Tan Wang is well known for their charcoal fish head steamboat. The restaurant uses charcoal for their steamboat to enhance the slurp worthy rich and sweet taste of the fish soup based. On top of the ingredients inside the steamboat, we also ordered their chewy Hock Chew and Sai To fishballs / enoki / pork slices and some green veges. They were very generous in refilling the strong flavoured soup. *thumbs up*
The beautiful seafood mural paintings on the wall and the traditional steamboat pots sets the entire ambience. The murals of the sea animals like the gigantic prawn and their catch of the day made our stomach hungrier.
The air-conditioned is not fully blast and the lacking of ventilation causing the 2nd floor to be slightly smoking when dining. Definitely one would prefer to wear a casual outfit when visiting. However the prices maybe a little higher compared to other restaurants but nevertheless the quality of the steamboat (ingredients/soup) is above par. Overall, we are happy with the great service, and friendly owners.
Uncle Albert Fish & Chips is one of the newly opened restaurant in Straits Quay. Known for their secret battered recipe Traditional English Fish and Chips which remains only within the family to this day. Uncle Albert expanded all around England and Ireland, now they are here in Asia, Straits Quay, Penang. They were having their opening promotion when we visited. For lunch, they will first serve us homemade bread to be dip into their homemade soup with a complimentary homemade iced lemon tea. While for dinner, they exchange their homemade ice lemon tea with ice-cream.
They have very limited choice of main course for their set menu but the service is great and we didn’t have to wait very long for our meals. During the normal days, you can opt for their Halibut and Cod. It might be on a pricey side, however the quality of the food is worth the money. For every main course meal, they are also giving a complimentary irish brown bread, ice lemon tea and homemade soup
