Yella Fork Cafe @ Jalan Chow Thye, Georgetown, Penang

Of all our cafe expeditions and travels for food, Penang still firmly holds the #1 spot for us. Certain local fares like Asam Laksa may take an acquired taste to appreciate them, but out of all our efforts to bring our foreign friends for Cuti-cuti Penang, most of them enjoyed food here. With all the RM3 hokkien mee and wanton mee around, it is crucial to stay competitive in terms of pricing.

Yella Fork Cafe recently opened at Jalan Chow Thye, along with some new eateries which we featured previously (Basement Six). Don’t worry we will not bore you with yet another cafe that serves regular eggs ben or breakfast platters. It is a cafe that serves fusion-Australian dishes to offer you a little something that is slightly different from the usual brunches which most cafes are already serving anyway. Another catch which appeals to our thrifty Penangite side being the pricing of the dishes set on the lower end, which is bound to attract a good number of patrons looking for affordable good food.

Junk Cafe @ Lebuh Chulia, Georgetown, Penang

Only a fortnight old, Junk Cafe which is located at the heart of Chulia Street is now open for dining. The interior is decorated with antique clocks, manual film cameras, rusty looking musical instruments and wooden old school table and benches. Besides the rusty and old school settings, there were also a collections of the classic gramphone discs displayed on a piano. Behind the wooden door, Junk Cafe continue to surprise us with interesting pieces of “funky” antique and a corner selling the limited edition clothings, shoes and accessories. While on the outside is where the master chef is at work, making the tender and juicy burgers.

Stay tuned for their new menu, as Junk continue to surprise us with their chicken sandwich / crab rolls and etc. Catch their latest update in their FB page ( Junk Cafe)

Bear Paw @ Gurney Paragon Mall, Georgetown, Penang

Despite its official opening quite some time back, Gurney Paragon is still relatively empty and is still filling up with new and exciting stores to offer you a myriad of food, shopping and entertainment. From time to time, we will travel the distance just to explore new eateries in the mall, one of its newest addition being Bear Paw.

With a total of 11 outlets in Klang Valley and Johor Bahru, Bear Paw is not an unfamiliar sight for those of you who frequent there. Recently launched its very first outlet in Penang, Bear Paw is a Taiwanese food chain set to redefine chinese paus, or rather ‘burgers’. It is located at the basement of Gurney Paragon, rather close by Sam’s Grocer, right next to Ban Heang.

Remember how the burger bakars from your neighbourhood stall are messy and calorie-laden? Bear Paw is more diet-friendly with its signature bear-paw shaped buns which are steamed instead of grilled with slabs of planta on it.

We love how you get to pick your own buns out of 4 very different choices: Milk, Brown Sugar, Whole Wheat Pumpkin. Each bun comes with a different colour and flavour profile. We were thinking of some Nicki Minaj buns and settled for Signature Bear Set with Brown Sugar buns. You can choose your own sauces from 5 different types too! (Honey Mustard, Teriyaki, Chilli, Thousand Island and Tartar)

Basement Six @ Jalan Chow Thye, Georgetown, Penang

Chow Thye Road has been busier than usual this year. One of the restaurant that caught my eye as we drove pass was the tastefully designed restaurant Basement 6. A restaurant that serves breakfast (8am – 11am only), lunch starts (12 noon till last call at 3pm) and dinner (6pm to 10pm).

We were sceptical initially, suspecting it to be one of those “nice to see only” cafes mushrooming in Penang. The patio area was designed to give the visitors a garden in the city ambience. We loved the little pots of plants accenting each table. For those who are already imagining the sweltering heat of the outdoors, fear not as the ceiling walls are raised high and abundant fans air the space. Diners can choose the indoor restaurant for the air-conditioned spot. We took the outdoor spot for the breezy wind and natural daylight while munching our breakfast. We had a heartily breakfast and diners can opt for their affordable lunch set / menu if one opt to laze on their bed on the weekends :)

Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar @ Straits Quay, Tanjung Tokong, Penang

We stopped by Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar for lunch before we do our shopping for Christmas along the quay. Situated at the North side with comfortable couches outside the restaurant overseeing the Quay side. For air-conditioned area, some might prefer to be seated inside with the unique wooden interior and the open bar concept. The restaurants serves a wide variety of German cuisine and delicious thin-crusted pizzas with a choice of different sides. They also have large platters to cater for big eaters / sharing between three to four people. What better combination to complete the meal with a pint of Hoegaarden or their imported draught of your choice. Not forgetting the most important point, it is definitely worth the value that we paid for the huge portion.

Coffee Affairs @ Lebuh Bishop, Georgetown, Penang

It’s ONE MORE MONTH to CHRISTMAS! Jingle Bells Jingle Bell! As the school bell rings, it marks the beginning of SCHOOL HOLIDAYS! The shopping malls and restaurants are busier than usual. People from near and far flooding Penang just to savour the good hawker foods and visit the heritage cafes. We stumbled on another new spot (not so new to Penangites) to check out. Coffee Affairs served freshly roast specialty coffee beans from different countries and delicious assorted pastries. The cafe offers brewing classes and purchase of brewing equipment.
