Yella Fork Cafe @ Jalan Chow Thye, Georgetown, Penang

Of all our cafe expeditions and travels for food, Penang still firmly holds the #1 spot for us. Certain local fares like Asam Laksa may take an acquired taste to appreciate them, but out of all our efforts to bring our foreign friends for Cuti-cuti Penang, most of them enjoyed food here. With all the RM3 hokkien mee and wanton mee around, it is crucial to stay competitive in terms of pricing.

Yella Fork Cafe recently opened at Jalan Chow Thye, along with some new eateries which we featured previously (Basement Six). Don’t worry we will not bore you with yet another cafe that serves regular eggs ben or breakfast platters. It is a cafe that serves fusion-Australian dishes to offer you a little something that is slightly different from the usual brunches which most cafes are already serving anyway. Another catch which appeals to our thrifty Penangite side being the pricing of the dishes set on the lower end, which is bound to attract a good number of patrons looking for affordable good food.

 Pumpkin Munchkins (RM10.50)

The sister wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of her diet and ordered a salad. Pumpkin Munchkin consists of a healthy mix of rockets and greens, basil leaves, coriander dressed with honey balsamic and to top it off with some great flavours, roasted pumpkin cubes with a generous portion of shredded cheese. It was a combination which we thought was completely odd and to be honest, we were shocked at how good it tastes. Brownie points for the refreshing mix of flavours and we liked how every component worked itself into the dish. Both YUM and healthy, what more can you ask for?

Creamy Chicken Mushroom Soup

The mushroom soup was too bland and watery for our liking, for we like our mushroom soups creamy with chunks of mushrooms medley. There’s so much potential in a bowl, we hope that the chef can work its magic and improve on this dish.

Rasta Beefsta (RM16.50)

At RM16.50, this Napoli sauce spaghetti topped with grilled Australian Striploin is simply a steal. The pasta was al-dente and mixed with tomato-based Napoli, carrots and capsicum. What distinguishes it from regular bolognese is that there is no minced meat in the sauce, rather the slices of tender and juicy striploins. Thumbs up to the chef for paying special attention to every single detail of the dishes.

Pie In The Sky (RM20.00)

The pie has a filling of chicken, thyme and mushroom filling, served with a side of salad and chutney. The filling is decently tasty but the pie crust was a little thick for our liking and lacks the buttery fragrance most pastries have. The dough needs some working but we endorse the pie for its creamy and smooth filling.

Roasted Pork Belly (RM21.50)

We are huge fans of crispy succulent siew yuks, and this definitely met our expectations. We enjoyed every bite of the pork belly blocks which were marinated for 24 hours prior to roasting. The meat was crispy, flavorful and tender, simply a gastronomical delight! What struck us as an peculiar flavour combination is the side of fragrant rice with lychee dressing. It was a risk taken by the chef, but we were rather unconvinced by this oddity. Perhaps something more savoury will suit our palate better.

Flat White Coffee Add-on (RM3.00)

For the additional RM3 top up in the lunch set, we are able to enjoy their freshly brewed flat white coffee.

Kudos to Yella Fork for its affordable meals and interesting flavors! Students and those who are looking for something different should definitely pay a visit. The place has a funky interior while exuding a cosy and homey ambiance. We definitely enjoyed our meal there and trust that Yella Fork can achieve greater heights with some refinement to some of the dishes.
