Maricosa @ Straits Quay, Tanjung Pinang, Penang

The first place we decided to blog about is about Maricosa, which is located at Straits Quay, Tanjung Pinang. Maricosa serves Hawaiian dishes such as Hawaiian pork curry, Island chicken, steaks, seafood-based appetisers. We visited this place twice, just so that we could try more things in the menu.

It was Mother’s Day when we visited, hence they had a Mother’s Day Special Set Meal for RM69.90++/pax.

Maricosa-01Soup : Carrot With Pumpkin Cream Soup

The pumpkin taste was rich but the croutons were not crunchy enough for my liking. I usually like a little crunch for my croutons which greatly helps in adding texture to the rich creamy soup.

Main Course: Cubano Sirloin Steak (well done)

The steak tasted subpar. It was served with broccoli, carrot and potato flour balls. The fatty portion was too thick, marring the texture slightly; it was also a little on the dry side.

Dessert : Mama Choco Brownie

The brownie was very chocolate-y and goes very well with the cool, creamy vanilla ice-cream; the mango sauce gave the dish a slight tanginess which elevated its flavour profile.

Drink : Fresh Pineapple Juice (Left) Complimentary Hawaii Mocktail from the set meal (Right)

The pineapple juice was sweet and refreshing, serving a good contrast to the heavy meal. The Hawaiian Mocktail had a strong orangey taste.

Seafood Tajine (RM89.90)

We were given the option of bread or rice to go with our Seafood Tajine. Its broth is cooked with clams, mussels, prawns, fish, sliced bacon, scallops, squids, potatoes and onions to achieve the sweet aromatic taste.

When we previously ordered the same dish, the seafood was exceptionally fresh and the dish was cooked just right. This was the second time we ordered the Seafood Tajine and unfortunately the seafood wasn’t as fresh.

I googled the word ‘Tajine’ out of curiosity and found out that it refers to the pot used to cook the dish.

‘Tajine’ or  ‘Tagine’ is a unique type of ceramic or clay cookware that’s popular in Morocco. The bottom is a wide, circular shallow pot used for both cooking and serving, while the top lid of the Tagine is distinctively shaped into a rounded dome or cone.

The colourful furniture and decor (check out those adorable fans and furniture!) created a vibrant and relaxed ambiance perfect for group gatherings or intimate family dinners.

The restaurant is located by the quay side where private yachts and boats are docked, hence you can drink in the view with your drink of choice in hand!
