Given every opportunity (& the extra space in our stomachs to gobble down some dessert), we constantly look for new eateries in Penang to try out. Among all the new quaint cafes sprouting out, Sugar Honey is newly opened, next to its neighbour with slightly more recognition, Moustache Houze. Like many other cafes located in Georgetown, it has a similar concept as many others: a touch of edginess on top of some preservation of the old. Apart from the food and drinks, they also sell some crafty items in the shop; feel free to look around because there’s no harm to your wallets doing so!
As we approached the cake display, we were greeted by a friendly lady whom we assumed to be the very owner of Sugar Honey. She kindly offered some recommendation for cake orders and mentioned that their cakes are all homemade and fresh from the oven. Some of her recommendations include their tiramisu, which contains mascarpone with alcohol and hence has a light creamy texture on top of the richness of the coffee liquer. Unfortunately, their tiramisu can only be featured after our second visit to the cafe since it wasn’t part of our order.
What we can offer, however, is a slice of their Chendol Crepe Cake. We love how they have added a touch of localisation to the original mille crepe, instead of the usual mille crepe flavours you find.
If you are wondering where to go for a hearty meal tonight for Christmas Eve, you may want to check out Javrie Restaurant & Pizzeria located at Gurney Paragon Mall. The restaurant is well decorated in the 70’s theme, utilizing the vintage poster-montage wall as a background for the momento photographs filled with scrumptious homemade pizzas, mouthwatering mushroom soup and unique ramen burgers. There is also an added touch of smooth wooden wall with glass panes to separate diners and passer-by shoppers, creating the perfect ambiance away from the hectic shopping scene just outside.
Hot deals from their menu includes their variety pizza options such as flaming tropical seafood, BBQ meat fiesta and tomyam chicken delight. AND the list goes on…
We chanced upon a Groupon deal of cash voucher RM 50 for just RM 25 and decided to give this new place a try.
Pie Harbour, another new breakfast hangout spot in Queensbay. In their menu, offering a different variety of fresh pies, sandwiches and snacks. And their drinks menu, coffee and juices are served together with your meal. Both Pie Harbour outlets (Queensbay and Gurney Paragon) also provide catering for occasions like birthday parties/ wedding or business lunch. With a simply motto, NO fussy meal and offers the best of fast food.
We enjoyed our brunch here, the portion is not too huge for both the sandwich and pies. Also, we will definitely go again for the huge gigantic cup of coffee. Honestly, IMO, the set (pie and coffee)/ (sandwich and lemon tea) is pretty pricey. They have their breakfast meal promotion on going, and it is RM5++ for the pie + coffee. BUT only selected pies and sandwiches.
What is curry mee? Penang Curry Mee is one of the MUST TRY hawker food when in Penang. This dish is made up from the thin yellow noodles and rice vermicelli (which we call bihun / bee hoon ) here served with spicy curry soup and coconut milk. To complete the dish, locals usually add in extra ingredients like dried tofu (tau pok), pig’s coagulated blood cubes, prawn, cuttlefish, chicken, boiled eggs, long beans and cockles. Just thinking about it, i’m sure you are already drooling. In certain places in Southeast Asia, especially southern Malaysia, Johor and Singapore calls it Curry Laksa.
Why this place? When we first visited this place, Hot Bowl White Curry Mee was filled with tourists and locals queuing up just to eat their curry mee / deboned chicken. Despite the long queue, we waited patiently for a table and try for ourselves. Unlike other Curry Mee stalls in Penang, Hot Bowl has a lighter pale colour soup compared to others because less coconut milk is used, hence the locals call this place the White Curry Mee. On each table, they prepared a container of chilli paste for the customers to add in at their own will. The homemade chilli paste helps to flavoured the overall taste better and spicier. Their shop is situated along Lorong Abu Siti. Also nearby is the famous Abu Siti Lane jelly coconuts and fresh coconuts.
What first came to my mind when we first visited this place is US pizza is originated from US. Is only at one’s rightful mind that they will think that way. So I decided to google and do some research about the place The place is very well decorated with car plates from all around the States and New York Statue of Liberty. The colour and designs are so catchy that you tricked yourself in believing that you are actually eating your lunch somewhere in the States. *Slaps!!! Back to reality*. The background and table cloth is covered with hot spicy red colour with red lights to match
Another US Pizza restaurant pop out located at Gujarat,India instead of the one in Penang, Malaysia. Well be sure you check properly the right restaurant before placing your orders Else, someone else might get it :P. I also looked thru their menu, not the same too hence they are not franchise.
For any promotion, you can check out their FB page. I couldn’t find their official website. They also have their promotions display outside their shop. Be sure to check it out before ordering
